Modern Fleet Readiness

According to a 2022 GAO report, the DoD currently spends $90B annually to maintain its weapon systems. At the same time, the same report also found that only four of 49 DoD aircraft met their annual mission capable goal in the majority of the fiscal years 2011-2021. DoD MROs suffer from root technology challenges to readiness - a problem that can increase costs and lower readiness over time. For example, data acquisition and transfer limitations, maintenance manual digitization, and outdated info systems lead to data capture problems, while limited sensor data on older aircraft leads to data analysis challenges. While readiness has traditionally fallen on maintenance teams to keep their vehicles and weapon systems mission capable at maximum uptime, these technical challenges keep mission capable rates low.
